Jerusalem on 29/06/10 by Alexandria Prain

Jerusalem, the long contested capital city of Israel, is perhaps the world's most sacred and holy cities. Nestled in the Judean Mountains and in between the Mediterranean and Dead Sea, this city provides its visitors spectacular views, rich culture, sacred holy sites and much more.

westernwall Jerusalem is considered by all three of the world's major religions to be a holy site. The city is the spiritual center and most important city in Judaism, is extremely important in Christianity and is the third holiest city in Islam. The city itself is divided into four quarters, today called the Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Muslim quarters. It has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times and captured and recaptured over 44 times. It remains to this day to be one of the main issues arising in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Given its immense historical and modern importance, the city is filled to the brim with amazing sites, museums, neighborhoods, parks and more.  When visiting this unique city make sure to head over to these great areas.

Historic & Religious Sites:

1. Western Wall: The heart of the city and perhaps its most famous site, the Western Wall symbolizes to Jews that God would and will not abandon Israel.

2. Muslim Quarter: Reaching across the northeastern area of the Old City, this district is the largest of the four quarters and is the most lively and least touristy. Here you can experience a truly authentic Middle Eastern market, food and vivaciousness. Make sure to test out their hummus, baklava and knafeh.

3. Ethiopian Church: A stunning church that offers visitors a rich and interesting history this impressive church and monastery is a must visit.

wallTours:

1. Ramparts Walk: Make sure to take a tour of the enormous walls surrounding the Old City, which offer an impressive blend of medieval and Middle Eastern architecture. The walk is accessible either from behind the Tower of David, which is across from the Jaffa Gate or from the Damascus Gate. Expect to wind through and enjoy gorgeous views from the Yemin Moshe and West Jerusalem, several major Old City christian churches, the Armenian Quarter, Valley of the Hinnom, Judean Desert and much more.

2. Supreme Court:
The highest house of justice, the Israeli Supreme Court is truly a stunning peace of architecture inspired by both Jewish tradition and ancient architecture. The building has a stunning glass pyramid that references the Tomb of Absalom at the bottom of the Mount of Olives. The court is open to the public Sunday-Thursday from 8:30-14:30. Individual tours are at 11:00 in Hebrew and 12:00 in English.

Markets and Shopping:

1. Arab Souk: Spread across both the Christian and Muslim Quarters, this authentic and bizarre market is filled to the max with anything from stalls of shoddy Middle Eastern tourist souvenirs to traditional kaffiyehs and jalabiyehs. This is by far the city's cheapest shopping area to pick up gifts ranging from hookahs to Arabic lutes and crucifixes. Located on the Moslem and Christian Quarter of the Old City.

2. Alrov Mamilla Avenue: Reaching from Agron Street junction down to Jaffa Gate, this avenue bridges both the new and modern with the ancient. The avenue offers everything from 19th century buildings, to street theater performances and designer shops with cafes and restaurants. Located outside of Jaffa Gate.
