Main Attractions

(*)Visit the "Parque de las Iguanas" downtown, home to hundreds of tame iguanas. Sit on a bench for a minute and they will crawl right up on you.

(*)Take the river cruise "Crucero Discovery", which rides up and down the Rio Guayas and has crazy parties at night.

(*)Head to the main beach, Salinas, with fishing, water sports, delicious seafood, and plenty of nightlife.

(*)Stroll down the Malecon 2000, an over 2-mile-long pier with shops, an IMAX, and great views of the river and the city.

(*)Check out Fort Santa Ana, a lookout spot and defensive position in the 19th and 20th centuries, now with a majestic but non-functional lighthouse and cannons.

When to go

Weather in Guayaquil varies little and is quite hot year-round, making it a great place to vacation in any month. From December to April the heat is humid and rain comes frequently, and from May to December the climate is dry.

How to get there

(bus) Cheap and convenient buses are available to Guayaquil from almost all locations in Ecuador, and are the perfect option for backpackers, students, and anyone traveling on a budget. Though frequent and efficient, comfort varies greatly. Flights are also available from Quito and Guayaquil into the José Joaquín de Olmedo International, which is a $5 cab ride from the city.

Visa information

Travelers from the US, Canada, most European countries, and Israel do not require a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. A 90 day tourist visa will be stamped in your passport at the airport.

Tipping

A common tip at restaurants is 10%. Taxi drivers should not be tipped, and rates should always be negotiated beforehand when traveling by taxi after 7 at night or any time there is no meter running.
